After last weekend's 2-19 to 1-21 defeat to Dublin in the Walsh Cup semi-final at Parnell Park, Galway now turn their attention to the first round of the National Hurling League in a fortnight’s time when they face Kilkenny in Pearse Stadium (Feb 24).

The Mayo senior hurling team got off to a winning start last weekend in their first game under newly appointed manager, Christy Philips. The Limerick native had previously acted as a selector under previous manager Murt Connolly during his two years in charge of the side. Last Sunday afternoon in the Connacht Centre of Excellence in Bekan, Mayo faced Donegal in Philips’ first game in charge of the team. Despite having to play without a number of regular starters from the last few years Philips’ side managed to see off the challenge of their Ulster opponents by a single point on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-12.

The Galway senior hurlers take their first steps in competitive action in the 2013 season when they face Carlow in the Bord Na Mona Walsh Cup this Sunday in Carlow (2pm).

Kinvara's Shane Kavanagh, who was the Galway senior hurling captain when they last won the league in 2010, has been recalled to the extended Galway hurling squad for the coming season.

It was a very strange league campaign for Mayo in division 2B of the national hurling league. They were unbeaten against the top two teams in the division yet only managed to finish in fourth place in the table out of six teams. The league campaign was bookended by impressive wins over bottom of the table Roscommon and eventual table toppers Kildare at the very end of the league stages. Both those wins of course did feature the talents of Keith Higgins who, as has become the norm in recent years, is balancing life as an inter-county footballer for one of the top sides in the country, and as the captain and leader of an inter-county hurling team a nice bit down the food chain when it comes to the small ball game. In between those two wins, Mayo held a fancied Meath side to a draw in Castlebar, before being beaten on the road by Armagh and overseas by London.

Being on top of the table in division one of the National Football League after only completing two games, while six of the other seven sides in the division have already played a game extra, has Mayo in good shape ahead of the visit of Down on Sunday to McHale Park.

Kilkenny boss Brian Cody likes to make statements of intent and by recalling many of his big guns and giving Galway a nine-point trimming last Sunday at Pearse Stadium, 2-20 to 1-14, he laid down a small marker for the year.

The case involving the kidnapping of former Kilkenny hurler Adrian Ronan and his family will now be heard in Dublin and not in Kilkenny as originally expected.
